M-Pesa vs Airtel Money vs Halopesa: Which Channel Converts Best?
We analyzed millions of transactions across MALIPOPAY to understand how conversion rates differ between Tanzania's mobile money networks - and what it means for your checkout flow.
The Data Behind Tanzania's Mobile Money Channels
When businesses ask which mobile money channel to prioritize, the honest answer is: all of them. But if you're curious about which channels drive the most transaction volume and which see the highest completion rates, we've got the data.
Based on aggregate, anonymized transaction data across the MALIPOPAY platform, here's what we've observed over the past 12 months.
Transaction Volume by Channel
M-Pesa continues to lead in transaction volume, particularly in Dar es Salaam and major urban centers. Its large user base and deep merchant penetration make it the first MNO most businesses think about.
- M-Pesa - highest volume, strongest in Dar es Salaam and Coast Region
- Airtel Money - strong second, particularly in Mwanza, Arusha, and northern regions
- Mixx by YAS (formerly Tigo Pesa) - significant share in Dodoma and central regions
- Halotel - growing presence, particularly strong in rural and western Tanzania
- TTCL Pesa - smaller but loyal user base, important for completeness
Conversion Rate Insights
Here's where it gets interesting. Raw volume doesn't tell the whole story. Conversion rate - the percentage of initiated transactions that complete successfully - varies meaningfully across channels.
Airtel Money tends to show slightly higher completion rates on average, likely because its STK push flow is marginally faster. Halopesa sees lower absolute volume but comparable completion rates to M-Pesa once a transaction is initiated.
The Case for Offering All Channels
Our strongest recommendation: offer all five. The incremental engineering cost of supporting a second, third, or fourth MNO through MALIPOPAY is zero - you're already integrated. The revenue upside from capturing customers on their preferred network is real and measurable.
Businesses that added all five MNOs saw an average 23% uplift in payment conversion versus those accepting only M-Pesa. Not because M-Pesa is inferior - but because some customers simply don't have M-Pesa, or their M-Pesa balance is low that day.
The best checkout experience is one where every customer can pay with what's in their wallet right now.
What This Means for Your Checkout
If you're using MALIPOPAY, you're already covering all five channels with a single API call. Channel selection is automatic based on the customer's phone number prefix - there's nothing to configure. The data here is useful context; the practical implication is simple: you're already doing the right thing.
